\ka-tə-ləst\
Etymology: Greek katálysis dissolution, equiv. to kataly(ein) to dissolve (kata- cata- + lyein to loosen) + -sis suffix in Gk. nouns denoting action, process, state, condition, from Gk. -sis, which is identical in meaning with L. -entia, Eng. -ing.
Function: Noun
1:A substance, structure, organization, device, which combined with other elements, modifies or increases a reaction without being consumed by it, without being in direct connection to the reaction. Basically it contributes but does not get involved.[1]
