1 -The term is refering to illegal immigrants, refugees or asylum seekers arriving en masse in old and crudely- made boats. The term became famous during the late 1970s with the mass departure of Vietnamese refugees from the communist- controlled Vietnam, following the Vietnam War.[1]

2 - Today the term is used for African refugees crossing the sea in overloaded boats in order to enter illegally the EU countries. Modern human trafficking, shipwreck, removal or imprisonment comes with it.[1]
